Easy DIY Photo Card

For the past couple of years, we have sent out a family newsletter in place of a Christmas card. This year, I thought I would try something different. A lot of our Christmas cards are sent to out of town relatives that we do not see very often. Several of them have asked for pictures of our family. So this year, I thought it would be nice to send a Christmas Photo Card that could be displayed year round.

I chose a nice recent family photo from a session that we did with a friend of mine. Although we were not dressed in Christmas colors, the strong red and black in the barn gave it a Christmas-y feel.

Normally, I would have cropped the left side so that our family was centered, but I left it this way for a reason. I will explain below. I printed 75 copies of this picture at our local drugstore in the 4x6 size.

Here are the other supplies I used, most of which were purchased from Hobby Lobby...

Scrapbook Paper, "Merry Christmas" Stamp and Black Ink Pad, Removable Glue Dots, and a Small Cutting Board (Scissors would work fine)

I cut my scrapbook paper into 1" x 4" pieces and stamped "Merry Christmas" onto each one. I chose a fun lime green scrapbook paper for a nice contrast against the red and black in the photo. I wanted something cute, but not so busy that you couldn't see the stamp.

I then took the glue dots and placed one on each end of the scrapbook paper strip and stuck it to the photo. (Now you see why I didn't crop out the empty left side.) The glue dots I purchased are completely removable and do not leave any residue. So when Christmas is over, my friends and family can remove the "Merry Christmas" portion of the card, and have a regular 4x6 photo of my family. Because everyone needs a picture of my family on display somewhere in their house! :)

I found a pack of blank note cards and envelopes at the craft store as well. I am going to only use the envelopes for my cards, and give the blank note cards along with a stamping set to my niece as a "DIY Card Making Kit" for one of her Christmas gifts.

On the back of each card, I am writing our names and the year. If I get lazy, I will just print our names off on some white mailing labels and stick them to the back. That's for those relatives that know our faces, but can't quite remember our names.

Not only were these photo cards easy to make, they were also inexpensive.

  • 75 Photos at $.28 each (I could have gotten them cheaper online if I didn't procrastinate.)
  • 4 Sheets of Scrapbook Paper = $2.40
  • Christmas Stamp = $4
  • Glue Dots = $4
  • Envelopes = $6 (They were $10, but I used a 40% off coupon!)
  • I already had the ink pad and the cutting board.
  • Total Spent = Approximately $.50 a card.

Now I've got to go get these cards in the mail!

Always,

Amanda
