A Natural Face...Kind Of

I am one of those girl's who doesn't leave the house without her makeup on. When I was younger, my mother worked in cosmetics and I would spend my afternoons hanging out at the makeup counter giving myself makeovers. Needless to say, I like makeup, so a true natural face isn't really an option for me. But I want to be more careful about what I put on my face every day.

Did you know that majority of cosmetics and skin care products are full of toxins? If you have a minute, check out this video.

There is a great website called Skin Deep where you can look up cosmetics and skin care products to check their level of safety on a scale of 1-10. It's pretty crazy that majority of what is available at your local drugstore or department store makeup counter is rated on the "unsafe" end of the scale. Even the popular "mineral" cosmetics contains unsafe ingredients (click here for more info). So what's a girl like me to do?

There are some great non-toxic cosmetic and skin-care products available online. I was at a La Leche League Conference a few weeks ago where I was introduced to a cosmetic line called Miessence. It's a great line of products! Unfortunately, also a little pricey for the girl that is used to buying all her makeup at the grocery store. I do hope to slowly add some of their products to my makeup regimen as I can afford to.

In the meantime, I'm going to try to find the least toxic items where I usually shop. Physician's Formula has come out with a new line called Organic Wear. The mascara is AMAZING!!! It received a rating of 3 meaning "moderate hazard" on a scale of 1-10. Not perfect, but much better than what I was wearing. I have tried out many heavy volume and/or lengthening types of mascara, and this tops all of them in my opinion. I love, love, love it! And it is packaged so pretty!

My sister-in-law has also done some research on easy to find, affordable cosmetics that are less toxic. You can check out her recommendations here.

As I try out more products, I will keep you posted on those I feel are worthy of recommendation. In the meantime, go to Skin Deep and see how your favorite products rate.

Always,

Amanda
